Great Moments in Musicals: Labyrinth

It’s October! In celebration of this spookiest of months, I want to ask you, ladies and gentlemen of the Internet, if you remember the days when the Disney Channel would show Labyrinth around Halloween. Those were good days. I don’t know if Labyrinth is really a Halloween movie, though it does have spooky moments, but I don’t really need much excuse to proclaim my love for it unabashedly. I’ve been watching this movie regularly since I was a child, and I never get tired of it. In fact, I’m watching it RIGHT NOW. True story.

I’ve chosen to celebrate this particular Great Moment because it illustrates just what I love about Labyrinth–it’s whatever you need it to be depending on your age. When I was little, I had no idea what was going on in this scene, but it looked very pretty, and Sarah had a poofy dress, and that was all I needed. Years later, as an adolescent, I actually paid attention and listened to the lyrics and realized that whoa, David Bowie likes her likes her, and very suddenly, this happy fantasy movie became a coming-of-age story as well. I possibly take this movie much more seriously than is justified. Anyway, Happy October!

Great Moments in Musicals: Talk Like a Pirate Day edition

It’s Talk Like a Pirate Day (for about 30 more minutes, I got it in under the wire here) and so, as my form of celebration, I offer up a clip from the freaking awesome Muppet Treasure Island.  There are few pleasures in life as pure as Tim Curry and some Muppets singing a song about Pirates.

Great Moments in Musicals: A Very Potter Musical

Maybe you’ve already seen A Very Potter Musical, or maybe you haven’t, in which case, get thee to YouTube immediately. It’s a musical parody of the entire Harry Potter series, and it is absolutely hilarious. Draco’s played by a girl, Dumbledore’s a jerk, and Voldemort and Quirrell have one of the greatest bromances I have ever seen in all my days. No, seriously. Stop reading this and go watch it, starting with part one.

Still here? Fine, I’ll entice you with a clip. You know what was missing from Goblet of Fire? After Voldemort’s resurrection, he should have tap danced.

Great Moments in Musicals: Grease 2

I recently experienced Grease 2 for the very first time. Perhaps my crush on Michelle Pfeiffer is influencing my opinion, but I kind of loved it. It’s terrible, of course, but it’s terrible in that High School Musical kind of way. It’s so bad, it’s hilarious. (Okay, sometimes it’s just plain bad.) Now, while “Cool Rider” is obviously the masterpiece of this movie, I decided to go with a different scene to showcase. I don’t even want to set this up for you. It speaks for itself.

Great Moments in Musicals: Next to Normal

Sometimes I hate New York just because it’s so far away from me. When the Tony nominations were announced recently, I wasn’t familiar with, like, anything (except for [title of show]! but that’s a different post…). So I decided it was time to educate myself, and I listened to the Next to Normal cast recording today. IT’S AMAZING. I was sobbing by the end of it, and I was teary during the entire thing.

Next to Normal is about a family dealing with the mom’s severe bipolar disorder. She also has hallucinations, specifically of her son who died when he was a baby. It’s heartbreaking. Thankfully, the show’s website has some videos of the show, so I can share this scene:

I know what I’m rooting for come the Tonys.

Great moments in musicals: Mother Goose Rock ‘n’ Rhyme

Do you remember Mother Goose Rock n Rhyme?  It was a Disney Channel movie from 1990, and it was a glorious bit of weirdness.  The story follows Little Bo Peep, played by Shelley Duvall, as she goes to see Mother Goose to help her find her sheep.  Mother Goose isn’t there, though, so instead, Bo Peep goes to find Mother Goose’s bitter, nursery rhyme hating son Gordon Goose.  As Bo Peep and Gordon go on a quest to find Mother Goose, the rest of Mother Goose’s characters start to go missing.
